For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. Psalm 139:13-16
For many years I mentored teenage girls. God has given me a heart for them because Lord knows how hard it is to be one in this dark world. Surely back in the “dinosaur age” when I was a young woman I felt the hard pressures and realities of socially and sexually damaging choices everywhere. In that day, as in now “mean girls” abounded but they were less successful than they are now. With the 24/7 social media there is never a chance to go mentally quiet and draw close to the heart of the One who made us or even try to understand our own hearts.
I remember my own “back in the day moments” – when I had a particularly tough school day, I could flee the pressure and go home for respite. My parents limited phone and tv time. We had no computers, iPhones, snap chats etc. We were forced to unplug – unwind – and seek mental and physical rest without the “whole world” judging our every move, thought or photo. “Competition” was something that was found in the classroom or the playing field but not in every selfie, tweet, visco or Facebook post.
Today, our young people (and dare I say many of us) do not have a minute to “meet” themselves because they are too busy building an image of who they think they should be, rather than becoming who they were designed to be. They have no time to know themselves and thus begin to believe they are the person they are pretending to be. The end result is a deep running river of insecurity.
Social media is damaging the self image of the human persona. Measuring ourselves via the unseen eyes and opinions of others is a lose – lose end game. What could be used as a positive tool for building the heart and minds of others, is in the hands of many, rather a blunt force object to cause extreme damage… dark silent often anonymous. It is also used to bend the minds of generations who don’t stop to think longer than it takes to scroll an instagram post. We are training minds to NOT develop critical, deductive reasoning – and the deep cerebral thought processes are quickly disappearing for the vast majority of the future adults of this planet. Oh how I mourn for the young ones today.
The culture of this day has sold them especially, but all of us a false narrative that cheapens the uniqueness of their very minds and souls. I overheard a conversation from one young woman to a young man the other day where she was saying, “as long as I keep my ‘body count under 40 by the time I am married, I don’t consider myself a slut.”
Oh. my. Word. That makes me physically ill to hear that. Dear one, do you not know how special and beautiful the flower of your body, heart and mind is? Why oh why would you allow the very precious one-of-a-kind person that you are to be used up and used away by someone who doesn’t honor who you are and the very uniqueness that you were born with? This is beyond tragic.
We now have several generations of walking wounded because of this laissez-faire attitude. It is a lie of epic proportions.
Ok. So now that I have vented a bit on this subject let me go weird on you and tell you what I think this is all about.
The enemy of our souls is sitting on his worldly throne and if he can keep us so busy listening to the voices of judgement, keep us focused on our lack of self worth, and keep us enemies to each other, then he will have accomplished his goal. To keep God’s creation from seeking and hearing the loving whispers of Our Father God.
We vie for likes and thumbs up and accolades from our online friends and never seek the still and quiet voice of the One who made us for a purpose, in His pleasure and especially unique to accomplish great things – for others. Not ourselves.
And in all of this, we are fearful. Which is right where the father of fear and lies wants us too. We are afraid of ourselves. Of our own thoughts. Of our own image. Of each other. Of the future. What would really happen if someone were to truly see who we are rather than the person we claim to be?
The buzz word these days is mindfulness. But are we even mindful of the madness we allow to consume our thought life, our spirit and our day to day decision making process? Since when is it ok for our beautiful God- made precious bodies to be used like a commodity? When is it ok for us to first seek what is wrong in our neighbor than to try to seek what is right or what we have in common? Why is it acceptable to carry such darkness inside that we inflict it on others?
I believe – no – I know that the increase in depression, drug use, suicide, gun violence and demonstrative anger in people, especially of a certain age, is very much due to this minute by minute barrage of no mental peace afforded to anyone. Many of our young people have not lived long enough to be “this angry” or this cavalier about their mental, emotional and spiritual well being- but yet they are. The enemy of our souls is cackling loud and proud over this state of affairs.
Call me Pollyanna. But I have lived long enough for the educated quarterback view. It’s easy to see what’s wrong here.
We have lost touch with our Dad. Our protector. Our creator. Whose Son Jesus paid sacrificially to give us saving grace and abundant lives through Him. Not abundance as in the things of this world. But abundance in spirit.
As long as we allow ourselves to be debased as humans, of living for the adulation of others and/or of agreeing with the wisdom of the day that we at best are animals or at worse, just a Cosmic mistake, how can we presume we have any intrinsic value? If we come from nothing. We are going to nothing. And thus – we are nothing.
Oh dear ones. Put down the phone. Unplug the laptop and mindfully pursue quiet. Seek the One who truly loves you. And listen to Him quietly tickle your ears with the Truth, not the Lies of the Enemy.
Do you not know? Have you not heard? You are made so special. One of a kind. Crafted with a soul and a brain and a beautiful plan for your life. You are made In the image of God. Your name is written in the very Palm of His hand. You are so much more than the edited, colorized, filtered thinned down, sexualized version of that Instagram post…
You are the daughter (or son) of a King.
Amen and amen to that.
